GTA 6: Release Date, File Size, New Features and the Launch-Day Madness
Thirteen years.
That's how long it's been since Grand Theft Auto V first arrived in 2013. We've had several generations of phones, countless viral internet trends, and enough GTA 6 rumours to fill a small library.
But the wait is almost over.
Grand Theft Auto VI is officially scheduled for release on Thursday 19 November 2026, bringing us back to the sun-soaked, crime-filled streets of Vice City.
And this isn't shaping up to be just another game launch.
People are booking time off work, businesses are being warned to prepare for an unusual number of holiday requests, and millions of players are getting ready to disappear into Rockstar's latest open world.
Somewhere, an office manager is about to discover that half their team has suddenly developed a keen interest in taking a long weekend in November.
So, what do we actually know about GTA 6? How much space will it need on your console? What's new? And could one video game really make a noticeable dent in the working week?
Let's get into it.

When is GTA 6 coming out?
Let's start with the question everyone wants answered.
GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
That's a Thursday, which seems almost deliberately designed to test the nation's commitment to turning up for work on Friday.
The game was previously expected in 2025, before being moved to May 2026 and subsequently November. Rockstar's most recent official announcements continue to confirm the 19 November release.
There's now an official launch trailer, pre-orders are open, and Rockstar has announced when players can begin downloading the game ahead of release.

Can you play GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?
No versions have been announced for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
The confirmed console release is for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so anyone still playing on older hardware would need to upgrade to one of those supported systems.
When is GTA 6 coming to PC?
Here's where PC players might want to look away for a moment.
Rockstar hasn't announced a PC release date.
That doesn't necessarily mean a PC version will never happen. Previous Grand Theft Auto games have arrived on PC after their console releases.
But until Rockstar makes an announcement, any suggested PC launch window is speculation.
For now, November's confirmed launch is a console affair.
How much storage space will GTA 6 need?
This could be one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the launch.
As of 21 October 2026, Rockstar hasn't officially confirmed GTA 6's download or installation size.
Not 150GB. Not 200GB. Not 300GB.
None of those figures should be treated as confirmed unless Rockstar or the official console storefronts publish them.
You'll find plenty of suspiciously precise numbers floating around online, often attached to dramatic headlines about how GTA 6 is going to swallow your entire SSD.
But the truth is that we don't know the final figure yet.
Could GTA 6 be a massive download?
It's certainly possible.
Rockstar has described GTA 6 as its most expansive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series, with a detailed open world spanning Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.
A game of that scope may require substantial storage, particularly when you consider its environments, audio, cinematics and other assets.
But impressive graphics and a large map don't automatically tell us how many gigabytes a finished game will need.
Developers use compression and other techniques to manage game files, and final installation sizes can differ significantly from early estimates.
Until there's an official figure, we'd rather tell you the truth than invent a number.
Your console has enough problems already without being accused of running out of space for a game that hasn't even launched.
When will we find out the actual GTA 6 file size?
Rockstar has confirmed that pre-loading begins on 12 November 2026, one week before release.
That should give players a much clearer picture of the space required, although the final installed size may still change with updates.
The best places to check are Rockstar's official announcements and the PlayStation or Xbox download information when it becomes available.
How to prepare your PS5 or Xbox storage
You don't need to start deleting half your game library just yet, but checking your available space now is sensible.
On PS5:
-
Open Settings from the home screen.
-
Select Storage.
-
Check how much free space is available.
-
Remove games you're no longer playing or move them to compatible storage if necessary.
PS5 games can be played from the console's internal SSD or a compatible installed M.2 SSD. Games stored on an external USB drive must be moved back to supported SSD storage before playing.
On Xbox Series X|S:
Open My games & apps and use the storage management options to review your installed games and available space.
You can remove games you're finished with or move compatible content between storage devices.
Remember that Xbox Series X|S optimised games generally need internal storage or compatible expansion-card storage to run, rather than an ordinary external USB drive.
Our advice? Check your space, wait for the official GTA 6 download requirements, and leave a little breathing room for updates.
And perhaps it's finally time to delete that game you've been telling yourself you'll finish since 2022.
When can you pre-load GTA 6?
Rockstar has confirmed 12 November 2026 as the start of pre-loading, with pre-orders eligible to begin downloading from local midnight.
This means you can prepare the game files before launch, rather than waiting until 19 November to start the download.
And given how many people will be eager to play, that's welcome news.
Pre-loading doesn't let you start the game a week early, though. You'll still need to wait until the official release time before you can play.
Does the physical version of GTA 6 include a disc?
Here's something important that buyers really need to know.
Rockstar has confirmed that the physical boxed version of GTA 6 contains a download code, not a game disc.
That means you're receiving a retail box with a code to redeem the game digitally.
The boxed edition is expected to become available from 12 November to support pre-loading, although when you receive a retailer pre-order will depend on that retailer's arrangements and delivery.
You'll need an internet connection, sufficient console storage and an appropriate platform account to redeem and download your copy.
It's also important to check the region of your download code, particularly on PlayStation.
If you're someone who likes a physical game case on the shelf, you still get one. Just don't expect to find a disc inside.
We've covered the differences between physical games and download-code editions in our Nintendo game formats guide, too.
What is GTA 6 actually about?
Rockstar is taking us back to Vice City, but not quite the Vice City we remember.
Gone are the days when the city's 1980s soundtrack was the main attraction. This is a modern Vice City, situated in the fictional American state of Leonida and inspired by Florida.
It's a world of beaches, nightlife, cars, crime, colourful personalities and what looks like an almost limitless supply of questionable decisions.
The story follows two main characters: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.
Jason has a military background and has become involved with local criminals. Lucia is trying to build a better life after serving time in prison.
Unfortunately, choosing a quiet life doesn't seem to be going particularly well.
When a seemingly straightforward criminal job goes wrong, the pair find themselves caught up in a conspiracy stretching across Leonida.
Rockstar's trailers make it clear that their relationship will be central to the story, with both characters needing to rely on each other.
Whether that partnership survives everything Vice City throws at them remains to be seen.
Where can you explore in GTA 6?
Vice City is only part of the picture.
Rockstar has revealed several locations across Leonida, each with its own atmosphere.
Vice City is the headline attraction, with its beaches, nightlife, neighbourhoods and towering skyline.
The Leonida Keys take players towards tropical islands, waterways and coastal scenery.
Grassrivers brings wetlands, wildlife and a very different atmosphere from the city's neon-lit streets.
Port Gellhorn is another location Rockstar has introduced, with a rougher, more run-down coastal character.
Mount Kalaga National Park offers wilderness, trails and outdoor scenery beyond the urban sprawl.
And Ambrosia shows another side of Leonida, away from the postcard-perfect beaches.
What makes this particularly interesting isn't simply the number of locations. It's the variety.
One minute you might be driving through a busy city. The next, you could be exploring waterways or heading into the wilderness.
Rockstar hasn't published a complete final map with every location and activity, so be cautious about online claims giving precise measurements for the entire game world.

What new features has Rockstar confirmed for GTA 6?
This is the section where we need to separate what Rockstar has actually shown from what the internet has decided must be in the game.
Rockstar's August 2026 extended gameplay presentation gave us a much better look at the world, its characters and how the game plays.
Here's what we can confidently discuss.
Two playable main characters
GTA 6 centres on Jason and Lucia, with Rockstar's gameplay footage showing how both characters fit into the experience.
The ability to move between the protagonists is an important part of what has been shown.
GTA V also featured multiple playable protagonists, so that idea isn't entirely new. What's different here is the relationship between the two main characters and the way Rockstar is building the story around them.
A more detailed world to explore
Rockstar has put considerable emphasis on the scale and immersion of Leonida.
The trailers and official gameplay footage show busy streets, beaches, waterways, different communities, varied landscapes and a huge amount of environmental detail.
That doesn't mean every building will be enterable or every object interactive.
Those are the sorts of details that need proper confirmation rather than enthusiastic guesswork.
Robberies, vehicles and police pursuits
The extended footage shows criminal activities, driving, robberies and encounters with law enforcement.
We also see a broader range of situations than simply driving from one mission marker to another.
Some previews have highlighted more elaborate police behaviour and changes to how players escape attention.
The footage gives us reasons to be excited, but we'd still avoid treating every suggested mechanic, such as exactly how police identify a suspect, as a fully explained system until Rockstar documents it.
Activities beyond the main story
Rockstar has shown a variety of recreational and outdoor activities, including water-based exploration and other pursuits across Leonida.
That's part of what makes Grand Theft Auto so appealing.
You can go into a session with every intention of progressing the story, only to realise three hours later that you've achieved absolutely nothing productive.
Apart from becoming extremely good at driving away from the police.
Which, depending on how you look at it, is still personal development.
PS5 features
Sony has officially confirmed that GTA 6 takes advantage of several PS5 features, including:
-
DualSense haptic feedback
-
Adaptive triggers
-
Audio through the controller's integrated speaker
-
Tempest 3D AudioTech
-
Fast loading using the PS5 SSD
The game is also listed as PS5 Pro enhanced.
These are confirmed PlayStation features, although they're not a promise of a particular frame rate or graphics setting.
As always, wait for official technical information before believing online performance comparisons.
Music and radio
You can't really have Grand Theft Auto without a memorable soundtrack.
Rockstar has confirmed that electronic duo Justice composed GTA 6's original score, while the game's music and radio stations are receiving their own official announcements.
The October launch trailer features the Justice track Flower in a Hurricane.
If Rockstar can deliver another great radio experience alongside everything else, players might spend as much time driving around listening to music as they do completing missions.
Some traditions are worth keeping.

Will GTA 6 have online multiplayer at launch?
This remains one of the questions worth watching.
Rockstar's pre-release material currently presents GTA 6 as a single-player experience.
The company has not provided a confirmed launch schedule for a new GTA 6 online multiplayer mode.
That doesn't mean Rockstar has abandoned the online side of Grand Theft Auto.
It simply means we shouldn't promise online multiplayer on day one without an official announcement.
For now, the confirmed attraction is Jason and Lucia's single-player story.
Could GTA 6 cause millions of people to take time off work?
Now for arguably the most entertaining part of the entire launch.
Apparently, some people are so excited about GTA 6 that they're arranging their annual leave around it.
And we're not just talking about a handful of gamers joking on social media.
According to research highlighted by HR software company CharlieHR and reported by Workplace Journal in October 2026, 7% of employees surveyed expected to book 19 November off work for GTA 6's release.
The report translates that proportion into an estimate of around 2.1 million UK workers.
A further 4% said they expected to take several days off, while other respondents anticipated changing shifts or working hours.
Let's be clear: these are survey-based intentions and estimates, not evidence that 2.1 million holiday requests have actually been approved.
But even as an indication of enthusiasm, it's remarkable.
There are film premieres, sporting events and music festivals that attract enormous attention.
Then there's GTA 6, potentially causing a nationwide shortage of people who are willing to attend a Thursday morning meeting.
The GTA 6 sick-day phenomenon
The same report found that 15% of respondents unable to book leave said they would be likely to call in sick.
We'd strongly recommend booking the day off properly instead.
Mainly because having to explain why you're unavailable while your gaming status says you're roaming around Vice City might be a difficult conversation.
Another October survey, reported by Workplace Journal and carried out for MoneySuperMarket Business Insurance, found that 65% of gamers working at small and medium-sized businesses intended to take time off around the launch.
That 65% applies to the surveyed gamers, not all employees at small businesses.
It's an important distinction, but the findings still demonstrate how unusual this release could be.
What happens on Friday 20 November?
This might be the bigger question for employers.
GTA 6 launches on Thursday, which means Friday could be just as interesting.
Some players will book both days off. Others might head into work after staying up far later than planned.
And somewhere in Britain, someone will arrive at their desk running entirely on coffee and the emotional consequences of a mission they couldn't complete at 2am.
These are predictions, of course. Nobody can know how many people will actually take leave until the launch arrives.
But GTA 6 has become more than a game release. For a lot of fans, it's an event they've been waiting years to experience.

Could GTA 6 really affect the UK economy?
It's a fair question, but the answer is more complicated than simply multiplying millions of holiday hours by an average wage.
If lots of people take the same day off, some businesses might experience scheduling difficulties.
A small team could certainly notice several employees being away at once.
But annual leave doesn't automatically equal lost economic output.
Employees are entitled to time off, many businesses plan around holidays, and work may simply be completed at another time.
Calling the entire estimated value of those hours an economic loss would be misleading.
There's another side to the story, too.
Games retailers, digital storefronts and the wider gaming industry could see considerable activity around launch.
It's also worth remembering that Grand Theft Auto is strongly connected to Britain's games industry, with Rockstar North based in Edinburgh.
And if you want a reminder of how commercially significant this franchise can be, look at GTA V.
GTA V made over $1 billion in three days
According to Take-Two Interactive, GTA V achieved estimated worldwide retail sales exceeding $1 billion within its first three days in September 2013.
That's an extraordinary figure for a game launched more than a decade ago.
It helps explain why expectations around GTA 6 are enormous.
However, those historical sales don't tell us exactly how much GTA 6 will earn, how many copies it will sell or what its net effect on Britain's economy will be.
Those figures will only become clearer after launch.
What we can say is that this is an unusually significant entertainment release, with potential implications for consumer spending, games retailers and workplace holiday planning.
Whether it actually moves national economic statistics is a question for economists, not GTA fan accounts.
Still, if your office is unusually quiet on 19 November, you may have a fairly good idea why.
GTA 6 pre-orders: What should you know before buying?
If you're planning to play on day one, it's worth making sure you understand the version you're ordering.
Rockstar has announced a Standard Edition and an Ultimate Edition, with the Ultimate Edition offering additional in-game content.
A Standard Edition owner can also purchase the Ultimate Edition upgrade separately.
Eligible pre-orders include the Vintage Vice City Pack, featuring a vehicle and garage, outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern.
Always check the precise benefits of your chosen edition, as digital and physical offers can differ.
Pre-order GTA 6 at Play Pixels
At Play Pixels, we're taking pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI Standard Edition for PlayStation 5.
Our listed version is Code in Box, meaning you'll receive a physical game case containing a digital download code rather than a disc.
It's worth checking the product page for the latest price, availability, contents and delivery information before ordering.
Pre-order GTA 6 for PS5 at Play Pixels
If you're buying as a present, remember to check that the recipient has a PS5, a suitable PlayStation account and enough space to download the game.
And if you're planning to use the pre-load period, check the retailer's expected delivery arrangements. Rockstar's availability date doesn't automatically guarantee a particular delivery date for every order.
How to get ready for GTA 6 launch day
If you're counting down the days, here's our advice.
-
Check your console. You'll need a supported PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
-
Check your storage. Wait for the official file size, but make sure you have room to work with.
-
Get your download sorted. Pre-loading begins on 12 November for eligible purchases.
-
Check what you're buying. Rockstar's boxed release contains a download code, not a disc.
-
Sort out your time off. If you're planning a long weekend in Vice City, booking your annual leave properly is probably the sensible approach.
-
Avoid spoilers. Once the game launches, social media could become a dangerous place for anyone who hasn't started the story.
And perhaps warn the people you live with that you may become slightly less responsive for a few days.
Not completely unavailable, of course.
Just emotionally located somewhere in Leonida.

Final thoughts: Vice City is almost calling
It's difficult to think of another game launch quite like this one.
GTA 6 has been anticipated for years. Rockstar has revealed a richly detailed new version of Vice City, two intriguing main characters and an open world that looks set to occupy players for a very long time.
There are still unanswered questions, particularly around the final download size, certain gameplay systems and future online features.
But with the release date approaching, those remaining details should become clearer.
What's already clear is how much attention the game is attracting beyond the usual gaming audience.
When HR companies are publishing research about how many people might take the day off to play a video game, you know something unusual is happening.
So clear some space on your console, keep an eye on Rockstar's announcements and, if you're planning to disappear into Vice City on launch day, maybe get that holiday request submitted.
Because Thursday 19 November 2026 could be a very quiet day in offices and a very busy day in Leonida.
And we suspect a few people might suddenly remember they've got unused annual leave.
